Live Fire Qualification
Live Fire Qualification
The live fire qualification is done at the Las Vegas Shooting Center at 5155 S. Dean Martin Dr. near Tropicana and I-15 Southbound. They are open 8am to 5pm. Click here for directions.
You will need 30 rounds of range ammo for the qualification and I recommend bringing a box of 50. You can shoot range or self-defensive ammo and of course range ammo is much cheaper and we’ll talk about when you should shoot your defensive rounds.
Live Fire Qualification
You must shoot a score of at least 70% of 300 or 210 points. 210 points is the minimum score to pass the live fire qualification.
A perfect score on the CCW Live Fire Qualification is 300 points. That’s all 30 shots in the X or 10 ring on a B-27 silhouette humanoid target. Shooting a perfect score eludes most people, less than 1% of all my students have shot a perfect score. In the last two years, I’ve had one student shoot a 300. SHE did the same thing 5 years ago with the same gun, a Glock G19 in 9mm, probably the #1 gun I’ve seen out of all of my students.
What you’ll need for the qualification
** 30 rounds of ammunition, a box of 50 is recommended. If you don’t have any, you can purchase some from the range.
** TWO Magazines for your handgun! The State of Nevada qualification requires the safe and efficient changing of magazines during the live fire exercise.
** Eye & Ear Protection which you can rent or purchase from the range if you don’t have any.
** A Range Bag to keep everything in. If you don’t have a range bag, the pistol must be in it’s case unloaded. I will be checking the condition of all bags.
A Minimum score of 210 is required to pass the live fire exam. This means you can miss 90 points and still pass! No one in my class has ever failed the qualification and most in my class miss only between 22 and 35 points.

Scoring
You get the score that lands within the rings. Break the line on a ring and you get the higher point.
X ring and 10 ring, drop no points.
9 ring drops one point.
8 ring drops two points.
7 ring drops three.
Miss the rings: -5 points
Miss the target: -10 points.
Lines of Fire
3 yards (9 feet)
ONE HAND ONLY
Right or left, your choice.
6 rounds total
Course of fire: Fire 6 rounds at the X ring.
No time limit.
5 yards (15 feet)
One or two hands. (Most people will use two hands from this point forward).
Must have two magazines!
12 rounds total – 6 rounds in one magazine, 6 rounds in a second magazine.
Course of fire: Fire all 6 rounds in the first magazine, come to slide-lock, perform a safe and efficient magazine change then fire the remaining 6 rounds.
No Time Limit
7 yards (21) feet
One or two hands.
Must have two magazines!
Course of fire: Fire all 6 rounds in the first magazine, come to slide-lock, perform a safe and efficient magazine change, then fire the remaining 6 rounds.
No Time Limit
From a self-defensive standpoint, my recommendation is –
1) A defensive handgun in at least 9mm, and;
2) Shooting continuously at least once per second at the range.
Practicing Before Class
If you shoot even once a year, you’ll have no problems passing the live fire qualification. The live fire qualification is not difficult. “It’s not about shooting, It’s about what you must do so you don’t have to shoot in the first place!“
